Hello awesome families!
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving break filled with rest and blessings. My Family stayed home caught up on some much needed time together, we even grew by 1 more :) We rescued a 5 month old black lab/Great Dane named Eleven and she is perfect!
We have spent the last 4 days settling back in from break with just finishing up units on life then and now (colonial days vs now, holiday traditions, and reading all types of material related to Thanksgiving and being thankful) we are going to be working until Christmas break on academic activities to gear us up for the holiday season. If your family needs us to work on any social stories with your kids that help for holidays or even breaks please do not hesitate to reach out and let me know the needs so we can help.
In math we work on weekly topics, not only working towards achieving and exceeding individual goals, we are also working on introducing new skills such as expanded form, time, measurement, reading and understanding word problems, for some we are into multiplication and division and for others we are tackling understanding numbers and corresponding them to correct amounts.
In language arts we break it down into reading and writing portion and have weekly spelling activities as well. I have weekly focus topics. We have not only been reading and concentrating on comprehension but also have been focusing on things such as, nouns and proper nouns, compound words, homophones, contractions, adjectives, verbs, and have begun breaking down components of what makes a good complete sentence working on writing complete sentences with correct format and grammar. It has been fun hearing and seeing some of these sentences really start to build into complete sentences. For writing we use a number of tools, we use the smartboard and unscramble sentences so they make sense, or even type on the smart board, we also have devices called Forte’s which are like little portable type writers and give 2 students at a time the ability to type their work out. Tomball also provides a program called CoWriter and Snap and Read which is a very helpful tool being taught to the kids who frequently use the computer or are typers, to help them develop complete sentences or even have the computer read material that may be too advance. Please let me know if you would like your child’s school email and password so you can let them use this program at home as it is a google chrome extension.
We are just finishing up a unit in science on Natural Disasters and weather safety during those events, the students got to relate with the recent natural disaster that impacted our area, Harvey, and took a deeper look into floods, avalanches, earthquakes, and forest fires (even learning about the recent fires out west and one that hit us close to home years ago in Bastrop County).
In Social Studies we just finished up a unit on the first Thanksgiving, learning about the Native Americans the Pilgrim’s voyage to America, their feast and honed in on friendship and helping each other as well as being Thankful. Hopefully everyone got to see one of the many activities we did in class, we made turkeys listing just a few of the things we are thankful for. The students got to celebrate the end of the unit and Thanksgiving finally being here with watching the classic Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.
As you can see we keep very busy here in the classroom and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
I love having your kids in class every day and love seeing them grow!
Do not hesitate to reach out to me at any time if there are ever questions or concerns or even needs you may have.
