THANK YOU so very much for all of the gifts, candy, and cards I received for Valentine's Day.  Every flower, card, bag or box of candy, and sweet gift made me feel so special and loved.  I just wanted to let you know how much all of your thoughtful gifts and kind words meant to me.  Thank you for your thoughtfulness and generosity!  You all certainly made my Valentine's Day extra special!

This Week in 3rd Grade (2/12 - 2/16)

I hope everyone is enjoying a great weekend!  Although the week ahead is a short one, we have many, many things happening!

This week in 3rd grade…

  • We will wrap up our fractions unit this week by exploring fractions on a number line when a whole is divided into different numbers of equal parts.  We will also identify equivalent fractions on number lines.  We will be taking our unit assessment with a focus on fractions on Thursday.  Half of the problems on the assessment will focus on fraction concepts, while the remainder of the test items will focus on skills and concepts from previous learning.  Our “Chocolate Cake Caper” performance task activities on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday will serve as an in-depth review of the key fraction concepts the students will see on Thursday’s test.
  • Math homework will be going home on Monday.  The homework will be due by Thursday this week (since Friday is a student holiday) as we will be reviewing and checking it together in class that day.
  • In science, we will be wrapping up our unit on soil by exploring different types of soil and noting the similarities and differences between the three main types.  We will be taking our assessment on soil the week after next so we will begin our review of the key concepts this week in order to prepare for our unit test on Wednesday following the upcoming Presidents’ Day holiday weekend.  I will be sending out a guide listing key concepts for the test later this week so the students will have a reference to help them study and prepare for the upcoming test.
  • Our fifth timed test for this Nine Weeks will be recorded this Thursday, 2/15. This will be our ninth test over the basic multiplication facts.  This test will cover the multiplication facts involving 4 as a factor through 4 x 10.  We will be practicing this specific cluster of facts in class, but please study them at home as well.
  • This Wednesday, our class will be having a Valentine’s Day party from 2:45 - 3:30.  Per school policy, the party will be restricted to the students, the teacher, and the room mother.  The students do not need to bring in a decorated box for their Valentines as we will be preparing a Valentine sack in class this week.  If you are able to help with the cost of Valentine’s Day party, a $5 donation would be greatly appreciated.  You can send in your donation in an envelope labeled for the room mother.  Thank you to those who have already sent in money.
  • Please send in any Box Tops you may have!  The deadline for submission for the current contest is Friday, February 23rd!  Just like last time, one class from each grade level will win a board game and popcorn party in the library.
  • This Thursday, 2/15 is Picture Day at Creekview!  Both spring individual portraits and group class pictures will be taken that day.  If you wish to purchase the group class picture, payment MUST be received by Picture Day.  Order forms were sent home in the last Wednesday Folder.  You may pay with cash or check or you may pay online at mylifetouch.com.  If you pay online, please include your online payment code on the order form envelope.  The spring individual portraits do NOT need to be purchased ahead of time.  You will receive the portrait package after Picture Day to review and purchase if you wish to do so.
  • Both Friday, 2/16 and Monday, 2/19 are student holidays!  Hope everyone enjoys the long holiday weekend!
  • Ms. Sims, our GT specialist, has asked us to send out the following reminder to all of our parents:  The Gifted & Talented parent recommendation window for spring testing is now open for students in grades 1 - 5. This Week in 3rd Grade (2/5 - 2/9)

Happy Super Bowl Sunday!!!  I hope everyone had a great first weekend in February!

This week in 3rd grade…

  • We will continue our fractions unit this week by using fraction tiles and fraction circles to explore comparing fractions with either the same denominators OR the same numerators.  We will also discuss the meaning of equivalent fractions and then use the fraction manipulatives to identify specific examples.
  • Math homework will be going home on Monday.  The homework will be due by Friday as we will be reviewing and checking it together in class that day.
  • In science, we will continue learning how soil is formed and what materials make up soil.  We will also be learning about the different layers that make up soil.  We will be going outside to collect and observe soil samples from a different area of our school property.  Last week, we looked at samples from our school playground.  This week, we will be going into a more wooded section of our school property to see how the soil there compares to the playground soil.
  • Our fourth timed test for this Nine Weeks will be recorded this Friday, 2/9. This will be our eighth test over the basic multiplication facts.  This test will cover the multiplication facts involving both 3 and 6 as factors through 3 x 10 and 6 x 10.  We will be practicing these specific clusters of facts in class, but please study these at home as well.
  • We will be having Career Day this Friday.  Thanks to Mrs. Robinett’s hard work and preparation, our 3rd graders were able to individually choose the top 3-5 presenters they wanted to visit on Friday so it should be a fun day for them as they learn about some interesting careers.

I can’t believe it’s already February!  I’m looking forward to the Winter Olympics getting underway this week.  Go Team USA!!!  Thank you so much for all of your support and help at home!

Math Homework due Friday!

Good morning!
Just wanted to send home a quick email to let you know that starting today, we will begin sending home weekly math problem solving homework assignments on Mondays.  The homework assignments will be due by Friday.  The students will only need to complete the circled items on the homework assignment as some of the problems listed may involve concepts and skills we have not yet covered in class.  The students may complete all of the problems in one night or they may spread them out over several nights.  Either way, the expectation is that the homework will need to be turned in by Friday as we will be reviewing and checking the assignments together in class (they will be able to turn in the homework early if it is completed before Friday).  Please encourage your children to show their strategies as they solve the problems.  Simply bubbling an answer choice will not be sufficient.  If they need additional work space to show their strategies, they may use regular notebook paper and then staple it to the homework assignment.
Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this new homework procedure.  Thank you!

3rd Grade Robotics Club!

Next week, Creekview will begin our Robotics Club after school on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  This opportunity is for 3rd Graders ONLY!  Sign-ups begin today and close this Wednesday, 1/24.  Mrs. Glenewinkel will be emailing the hard copy of the permission slip today, but you may also sign up online by clicking the link below.
Please let me know if you have any questions.  Thank you!

This Week in 3rd Grade (1/22 - 1/26)

WOW!!!  What a crazy week it was last week!  I hope everyone enjoyed the warmer temperatures this weekend.  Because of our two “snow days” last Tuesday and Wednesday, many of the activities listed below will probably sound familiar as we were unable to get to everything as originally planned last week.

This week in 3rd grade…

  • In math, we will continue working on division as sharing, or dividing, a total number of objects into equal groups. We will discuss different strategies for division and review how multiplication and division are inverse operations where knowing our multiplication facts can help us learn our related division facts.
  • In science, we will be finishing up our unit on rapid changes to the Earth’s surface by learning about different types and characteristics of landforms that can be found on Earth. We will have our unit assessment on rapid changes and landforms this Tuesday, 1/23.  The students will be encouraged to take their science books home with them to read and review the related pages on changes to the Earth’s surface (pp. 202-207) so they will be best prepared for Tuesday’s test.  After our lab experience on Wednesday, we will be moving into our unit on soil when we will learn how soil is formed and what materials make up soil.
  • Our second timed test for this Nine Weeks will be recorded this Friday, 1/26. This will be our sixth test over the basic multiplication facts.  This test will cover the multiplication facts involving 3 as a factor through 3 x 10.  We will be practicing this specific cluster of facts in class, but please study these at home as well.

Hope everyone has a great week!  Thank you for all your support and help at home!
