About me.....
My name is Jill Martin and this is my 13th year in Education. I have taught all subjects from 2nd-5th grade.  I have taught in Mcallen, Texas as well as Spring and Klein ISD. I am from Louisiana and attended LSU but graduated from the University of Houston. I graduated high school overseas in Indonesia and lived and traveled all over the world. Another fun fact about me is that I used to cheer for the NBA Houston Rockets. I have been married for 15 years and have two beautiful kids. I love making learning fun and doing room transformations and can't wait to see you all.

February 26-March 6

We are learning about argumentative texts using various articles and essays.  The students are exploring the author's claim, arguments, counter arguments, and detailed evidence for those arguments.  We are determining the intended audience for the argumentative text to better help us understand the purpose of each piece.

In writing each student has also selected a claim they want to develop into a published piece of writing. This is an exciting new type of writing.

Student's independent reading and reflection should continue be an informational text on his/her own reading level. In class students are expected to reflect on what they read by stopping and jotting based on the criteria shown on the 3rd Nine Weeks Stop and Jot Rubric for Informational Text. This rubric is one major grade in reading for the third nine weeks. Every opportunity is given for your child to be successful on this so that he or she may grow as a reader. The final opportunity for each student to increase this score is on Wednesday, March 4.

February 1-18th

We continue our work with informational texts over the next few weeks. The characteristics, central ideas, supporting details, structures, and features of a variety of informational texts are our main focus.I am challenging students to read lots of different informational text on a variety of topics. Critical thinking, summarizing, using context clues, using text evidence, making connections, and building up stamina are areas in which we will also focus our attention.

Student's independent reading and reflection should be an informational text on his/her own reading level. In class students are expected to reflect on what they read by stopping and jotting based on the criteria shown on the 3rd Nine Weeks Stop and Jot Rubric for Informational Text. This rubric is one major grade in reading for the third nine weeks.  The student’s stop and jot work will be assessed 3 times to provide the opportunity to reach mastery of the assessed skills. The dates these will be assessed are Jan 22, Feb 12, and March 4. Any changes to these dates will be communicated via Edlio updates. Each student has a copy of this rubric in his/her reading notebook to support them.  This rubric is also posted in Google Classroom and will remain posted here for easy access.

In writing students are composing an informational piece based on a topic selected by the student with teacher guidance. Students will be expected to prewrite, draft, rewrite, revise, edit, rewrite, and publish. Conferences with the teacher along with careful reflection and checking by the student will help the student write the best piece possible. These will be scored using the Informative Writing Rubric linked here. These will be completed by February 10.

Reminder

Dear 5th Grade Parents,

Just a friendly reminder about tonight's 6th grade parent information meeting.  It will be held at Creekside Park Junior High at 6:00 pm.  I have attached the powerpoint presentation with information that will be shared at this meeting for any parents unable to attend tonight.

Students will be coming home with a GREEN course selection form in their Wednesday folder tomorrow, and this meeting will assist you in helping your student to select their courses for next year.  Please complete this form with your student and return this form to school by this Friday, January 17th! We appreciate your diligence in returning these forms so that we may assist students in entering their selections with the junior high counselors next week.

If you have any questions, please let us know.

Thank you for your continued support!

January 8-24

In reading students are exploring the characteristics, central ideas, supporting details, structures, and features of a variety of informational texts.  Student's independent reading and reflection during the third nine weeks is first an informational biography or autobiography. Then, each may select any informational text on his/her own reading level.

Each student will soon have a copy of this rubric in his/her reading notebook to support them.  This rubric is also posted in Google Classroom and will remain posted here for easy access.

In writing students are composing daily quick writes based on a given prompt as well as self selected topics. We will also be composing an informational piece of writing based on a topic selected by the student.  Students will be expected to prewrite, draft, rewrite, revise, edit, rewrite, and publish. Conferences with the teacher along with careful reflection and checking by the student will help the student write the best piece possible.

Toy Drive

Toy Drive: December 9th-13th

Creekview Cares will be collecting toys to donate to Interfaith of The Woodlands.

If you wish to participate, please bring a new, unwrapped gift for a child of the same age and gender as your student.

The collection location will be in the main hallway the duration of the week.

Have your student drop their donation off before Rise and Shine at the designated tables.

December 4-20

Over the next few weeks in reading our goal is to compare and contrast works of fiction.  We will first revisit fiction text read earlier in the year and analyze them together.  Then, students will work through new pieces of traditional literature, realistic fiction, historical fiction, drama, and poetry in small groups to compare and contrast the themes and ideas.

Students are still reading independently and writing about what they have read with stop and jots.  The expectation is for them to read and reflect daily in class, but there is not a designated rubric for them to follow.  After the holiday break, we will return to a specific rubric guideline for independent reading of informational text.

In writing students are learning about formal written correspondence to request information. This is a new look into letter writing for most of them, so it will be fun to see what each student composes for his/her own formal correspondence.
