Change in Homework for TONIGHT, 10/18!

Good morning!
I just wanted to let you know of a change in our homework plan for TONIGHT, 10/18!  The original plan was for the students to watch a flipped video.  Rather than watching a video, we are sending home a practice page with 4 problems on one side and a game on the back side.  We would like for the students to work the four problems using any of the addition strategies that they learned about in Monday night's video.  Please stress the importance of showing their work/strategies for their answers.  The students will have notebook paper in their green homework folders in case they need more space for their work/strategies.  This paper can be stapled to their practice page.  The game is not required but is available for those who want to play.
Please let me know if you have any questions!  Thank you!

This Week in 3rd Grade (10/16 - 10/20)

Hope everyone had a great weekend.  Here’s what’s happening in 3rd grade this week…

  • This week in math, we will be starting our unit on addition. We will be learning about strategies to use when adding 3-digit numbers.  We will have “Flipped Video” math INB homework assignments related to addition on Monday AND Wednesday this week.  You will be able to find and access the video links on both our Google Classroom and my teacher webpage.
  • Our first timed test for the 2nd Nine Weeks will be administered this Friday, 10/20! It will focus on doubles and using doubles to help with addition and subtraction facts (i.e. 5 + 5, 9 + 8, 20 – 10, and 13 - 6).
  • This week in science, we will take a test on mixtures and sink/float on Tuesday, 10/17. We will begin our new unit on sound energy on Wednesday.
  • SMILE – it’s Picture Day! Individual student pictures will be taken this Thursday, October 19th.  If you wish to purchase the individual pictures, payment must be turned in (or paid online) by Thursday.  A picture order form went home in last week’s Wednesday Folder.

Please let me know if you have any questions.  Have a great week!

Math Coaches Needed!

Please see below for a message from our GT Specialist...

Calling all parents with a love for Math!  We are growing our TMSCA Teams this year.  There are a couple of ways you can help.  We need coaches for 3rd - 5th graders who will compete in in TMSCA tournaments. We need your expertise in the following categories:

* General Mathematics

* Number Sense (mental math)

* Calculator Applications

* Science

1. You can volunteer to coach at our weekly practices once a week or bi-weekly.

     (We have lots of resources to assist you).

2.  You can volunteer to record a lesson via video for our students to watch during

      practice.

We would love to have your help as we build a strong and competitive TMSCA team.

Please contact Sheri Sims at sherisims@tomballisd.net with questions or to volunteer!  We appreciate you!

This Week in 3rd Grade (10/9 - 10/13)

Hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend!  Here’s what’s happening in 3rd grade this coming week…

  • REMINDER: No school tomorrow (Monday, 10/9) as it is a student holiday!
  • This week in math, we will be focusing on counting collections of money (bills and coins) and estimating numbers using the steps for rounding that we explored last week. Because of our student holiday on Monday, we will only have one “Flipped Video” math INB homework assignment this week (on Wednesday).  The video will be posted on our Google Classroom and on my teacher webpage.
  • Due to last week’s postponement, we will have our second test in math this Tuesday, 10/10. This District Common Assessment will focus on place value – more specifically, place value relationships (the essence of our place-value system – the idea that a digit in one place represents ten times what it would represent in the place immediately to its right), different ways to represent and name numbers (using place value blocks, standard form, expanded form, expanded notation, and word form), rounding numbers to the nearest 10; 100; 1,000, and 10,000; and money (counting different collections of bills and coins).
  • Our final timed test on the mixed addition and subtraction facts for the 1st Nine Weeks will be administered this Thursday, 10/12 instead of Friday (since grades must be submitted by the end of the day on Friday)! The test will focus on using doubles facts to help with other facts (using doubles +/- 0, 1, or 2) such as 4 + 5, 8 + 6, 11 – 5, and 16 – 7.
  • This week in science, we will focus on exploring and recognizing that a mixture is created when two or more materials are combined and can be easily separated. We will also be using aluminum foil boats and balls to investigate how objects can be changed to cause sinking and floating.

Hope everyone has a great second week of October!

This Week in 3rd Grade (10/2 - 10/6)

HAPPY OCTOBER!  Here’s what’s happening in 3rd grade this week…

  • This week in math, we will be focusing on rounding whole numbers by representing numbers on a number line as being between two multiples of 10; 100; 1,000; or 10,000. We will also be focusing on counting collections of money (bills and coins).  We will have “Flipped Video” math INB homework assignments on Monday AND Wednesday this week.  The videos will be posted on both our Google Classroom and on my teacher webpage.
  • We will have our second test in math this Thursday, 10/5. This District Common Assessment will focus on place value – more specifically, place value relationships (the essence of our place-value system – the idea that a digit in one place represents ten times what it would represent in the place immediately to its right), different ways to represent and name numbers (using place value blocks, standard form, expanded form, and word form), rounding, and money (counting different collections of bills and coins).
  • Our third recorded timed test on the mixed addition and subtraction facts will be administered this Friday, 10/6! It will include a review of facts from our first two timed tests – more specifically, addition doubles (i.e. 2 + 2, 6 + 6, 10 + 10), subtraction halves (i.e. 8 - 4, 16 – 8, 12 - 6), and addition and subtraction facts involving 10  (10 + 5, 8 + 10, 12 – 10, 14 – 4).
  • This week in science, we will focus on measuring, testing, and recording physical properties of matter. We will also explore and recognize that a mixture is created when two or more materials are combined.
  • We will have our first science test this Wednesday, 10/4. The District Common Assessment will cover states of matter, properties of matter, and ways to measure matter.  I will be encouraging the students to take their science textbooks and science INBs home to review these key concepts.  Key vocabulary and important content related to matter can be found in Chapter 2 of our science textbook.  The science textbook can also be accessed online if you go to my teacher website and then click on “Links” to find the drop-down menu for “Science Textbook” access.  Directions for logging on are provided there as well.
  • We will have Early Dismissal at 12:50 this Friday, October 6th. Our lunchtime that day will be from 12:22 – 12:42.
  • There will be no school on Monday, October 9th as it is a student holiday!

Hope everyone has a great first week of October!
